What Is Image Aspect Ratio?
Have you ever resized a photo only to find the subject looking unnaturally stretched horizontally or squished vertically? That happens when the aspect ratio is altered incorrectly during resizing.
Defining Aspect Ratio
An image's aspect ratio is the proportional ratio of its width to its height. It is expressed as two numbers separated by a colon, such as 16:9 or 1:1.
It is important to note that aspect ratio describes proportions, not physical measurement units. An image measuring 1920 ร 1080 pixels and an image measuring 1280 ร 720 pixels both share the exact same 16:9 aspect ratio because:
1920 / 1080 = 1.777 | 1280 / 720 = 1.777
Common Standard Aspect Ratios
| Aspect Ratio | Common Dimensions | Standard Use Cases |
|---|---|---|
| 16:9 (Widescreen) | 1920 ร 1080, 1280 ร 720, 3840 ร 2160 | YouTube thumbnails, landscape video, presentations, monitors |
| 1:1 (Square) | 1080 ร 1080, 1200 ร 1200, 500 ร 500 | Instagram feed posts, e-commerce product grids, profile avatars |
| 4:5 (Portrait) | 1080 ร 1350 | Instagram feed vertical portraits (takes maximum vertical screen space) |
| 9:16 (Vertical Story) | 1080 ร 1920 | Instagram Stories, TikTok videos, YouTube Shorts, Reels |
| 4:3 (Standard Photo) | 1024 ร 768, 4000 ร 3000 | Micro Four Thirds camera sensors, tablets, digital camera photos |
| 3:2 (Classic 35mm) | 6000 ร 4000, 1080 ร 720 | Standard DSLR/mirrorless camera photos and print photo postcards |
Why You Must Lock Aspect Ratio When Resizing
When you resize an image, modifying the width without automatically adjusting the height breaks the original proportion ratio.
For instance, if your original photo is 2000 ร 1000 pixels (ratio 2:1) and you change the width to 1000 pixels while keeping the height at 1000 pixels, the ratio changes to 1:1. The image elements will appear squeezed.
By maintaining an Aspect Ratio Lock (represented by a lock icon ๐ in tools like Image Size Changer), typing 1000 for width automatically calculates 500 for height, preserving perfect visual proportions.
How Aspect Ratio Calculation Works
The math formula to find new height when changing width while locking aspect ratio is:
New Height = (Original Height / Original Width) ร New Width
